how ridiculous, putting a dollar value on a tree

I don’t think so. Many people don’t view trees (in their natural, living state) as worth much. Also, many many people understand the value of money. This gives people a usual tool to look at nature and it’s worth in a different light, and hopefully start appreciating and preserving it, if only for it’s monetary value.

it may seem ridiculous to you, but for many people it is an eye opener.
